The reason is simple. India can’t bat when they look at big score. Any team for that matter. Steyn may look like ant if it is otherway that india batted first.
Main reason india can’t be number 1 is lack of fast bowlers who can bowl 145kmph+ consistent and lack of fast bowling all rounder.
So far India was feasting on GOD’s batting exploits for most of their wins. If he threw away wicket like yesterday , then there is only one choice. India has to lose. It is matter of how fast steyn can bundle out india now.
It is also interesting to note that SA found chinks in Gambhir’s armor.

The next gen of Indian batsmen are good.Very good, in fact. But I agree with you about the bowlers – both pace and spin. If its the shorter formats that are killing our test prospect slow bowlers, the pace bowlers are losing 10-15 kmph in speed within 1 year of international debut. Skills wise, Zaheer is as good as Steyn, but he lacks the pace. It is not about eating beef or pork. Zaheer, Irfan and even Nehra wouldn’t shy away from red meat. It is the lack of institutional knowledge about how to keep one self fit and increase the yards in pace rather than lose those yards. Part of the blame lies with Venkatesh Prasad, the slowest fast bowler the world has ever seen.As the bowling coach, he focused too much on curving it in and out, than sustaining the pace.I’d love it if India can get a good pace bowling coach from SA or Aus. We have Simons now, and it is early days yet.So, have to wait and watch.
It does not matter a lot even if India loses or draws the next test at Kolkata. SA will be no.1, India will be no.2 and Aus will be no.3. It will be a good wakeup call for Dhoni, who has not lost a single test till now, and for the Indian cricketing world in general, as we have gone 18 months without a loss. The next gen will learn that in sport, one can’t always win.

Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu (back from the ICL wilderness and I hope will start getting noticed again soon), Virat Kohli, and Raina – these are the people that come to mind right away.And then, as you say, we have Vijay and Badri. All these people have played long innings at first class level.
It is quite reasonable to expect 2-3 players among this crowd to make it to the test team and ement their spots, after the big three retire. Viru and Gautam, and Dhoni are going to be around for a few years to guide these youngsters.

This was a fantastic display of fast bowling. One of the best I have seen since Malcolm Marshall visited the sub-continent. Couldn’t believe my eyes when the top batsman were leaving balls and getting bowled. Gavaskar in his column correctly called it timidity. I truly hope that they show some “balls” in the next test.
Until domestic cricket grounds start producing sporting wickets, our batsman are always going to succumb to express bowlers and short pitched stuff. They should be made to practice on matting wickets with shortened pitch length before starting a series against SA or Aus.

Possibility of next gen Indian batsman are good is that simply because for Test batsman you do not need that much strength or stamina , you just need skill and timing…deflect the ball right time. Angled bat such that the ball bounce off the bat slightly to get the speed , if u hit the ball on the ground direct , ball lose speed immediately…it needs momentum and a punch. It is kind of golf swing…harder you hit , more the ball go to the woods.
Next gen Indian bowlers will never be good simply because it is the diet the problem. Indians need to eat meat every day ..all times. Beef is the key to strength. The easiest way to be rich is copy the successful people , same definition , if you want to know pak produces always decent to top quality fast bowler is because of heavy meat diet. Lamb may be tasty , beef is protein rich. Also indians do only toning than lifting weights and that is the problem for so many niggle injury they encounter.

I completely disagree. There is nothing different from indian and pakistani except meat diet. When you eat veg diet , you are already with less energy. Humans are infact a energy conservationist by nature. You are happy when you have lots of bubbling energy. When you have less energy , you talk negative and pull every one down. Many Hindus and Sikhs eat eggs and many more eat meat – and of course, Muslims eat anything except for a few types of meat and atheists/non-comitted eat whatever they want to. Even if they were vego, plenty of ‘energy giving’ protein can come from sources other than meat – Avocadoes, nuts etc.

There are lot of reasons why indians do not eat meat. Affordability. So best way is develop a boarding school for all exceptionally tall kids…and they can even excel in other sports.
India can produce fast bowlers , all it need is allow scouting system/agent in cricket like in baseball. In baseball , scouts go around cuba ,wi and domican republic to see youngsters play and they gave money and guidence to some prospects for future recruitment.
If indian close knit BCCI shareholders allow that , then there is a chance we can keep finding diamond in the rough. At present all domestic cricket selections are relatives of local cricket board which are controlled by midgets who likes midgets.
You allow foreigner to be scout for indian fast bowler , u will find many many talented bowlers who never get a chance otherwise. if there is a hope for selection , there is lot of people will compete. At present door is closed. It is for “select” midget people.
