Watching at full speed doesn’t help the English cause much.

  2. Homer  •  Jul 19, 2009 @13:36

Why the umpires didnt do what they did for KP against India at Lords in 2007 is beyond me. Also, its official – neither the Aussies nor the Poms know what constitutes a legal catch..

    Brilliant!

    Cheers,

  3. raj  •  Jul 19, 2009 @13:45

Homer, what are you talking? That was india so anything goes. This is england, one can’t be that conspiciously highlighting cheating. But as you said, it is clear now that neither the english nor their cousins from down under know a legal catch. Birds of same feather!

    Great,

After getting shafted by Aleem Dar and the Morgan Freeman look-a-like in 2005, it’s deja vu all over again, Saffa style.

    Just great.

  5. Moses  •  Jul 19, 2009 @13:50

    Hey homer and raj,
We all do it, yes, even India

I don’t really blame Strauss, I’d have claimed it too. The umpires however should at least try and be consistent, sure they’ll make mistakes due to incompetence (see Ricky in 1st innings and Simon Katich caught off a no ball), but there was no excuse to not send this upstairs when you look at the Hauritz one from yesterday.

  6. Lou  •  Jul 19, 2009 @13:51

Australia have played like gash in this match so quite frankly it feels academic to me. But yes, the moral high ground that English fans love claiming is in tatters.

  7. Moses  •  Jul 19, 2009 @13:59

Lou, that’s the risk the Pommy fans took when they stocked their team with Saffas

  8. Tony T  •  Jul 19, 2009 @14:07

I’ve phoned through to Heathrow to have the Qantas warmed up and ready to bring the Aussies back to Australia unless Hughes and Katich are reinstated by the tea break.

  9. Homer  •  Jul 19, 2009 @14:10

    Moses,

The KP dismissal ( in the video) and subsequent reversal is what I had mentioned in the previous comment – the umpires set a precedent and then set another. So much for consistency!

Moses, the indians cheat as well, no doubt. But we have seen Ponting blatantly do the same and then pontificate about the spirit of cricket. That is so hypocritical.

And you say you dont blame the fielder? Thats very convinient, isnt it? The umpire gets the blame while the fielder can cheat and still talk about the spirit of cricket as and when it suits him.

  12. JC  •  Jul 19, 2009 @14:24

What happened to that pact that Ponting’s been trying to get all the opponents to sign that says that they’ll take the fielder’s word for a catch? Might Ricky lose a little enthusiasm for it now? Or will there just be a little bit of small print somewhere that says that the fielder’s word will be taken, as long as the fielder is Aussie?

  13. Sunny  •  Jul 19, 2009 @16:37

of course it was dodgy catch. ponting said so.

  14. Sunny  •  Jul 19, 2009 @16:47

@JC – that pact has taken a back seat because it finally dawned on punter that no one trusts his team.

  15. Rob  •  Jul 19, 2009 @17:29

The problem is that anything even remotely near the turf will be given not out on replay — because of the deficiencies of the technology — it is therefore useless. In that case the umpires should make a live decision — which is what happened. Whether it should have been out or not, one thing is clear — before ultra motion cameras it would definately have been given out.

  16. raj  •  Jul 19, 2009 @17:37

Oi oi , looks like australia are pulling off the chase so perhaps strauss can be pardoned after all?I was wrong – if you are Ricky , you can sow bad behaviour, poor sportsmanship and whining without actually reaping it, it seems!
Australia to win this match comfortably, only rain can save england now!

  17. raj  •  Jul 19, 2009 @17:39

Sunny, drop it mate. Everyone except the aussies cheat. Aussies are paragons of virtue. If you don’t know this, you shouldn’t be watching cricket, or t the least not watching matchyes involving that epitome of sportsmanship, rickky pontttingg

  18. Robert  •  Jul 19, 2009 @17:54

Raj, why don’t you shut up. Andrew Strauss and that happy-go-lucky captain of the Indian team, Dhoni are both cheats. Both of them lied to send the batsman back to the pavillion. Punter has integrity. He may raise his index finger, get in a bar brawl and complain about a lot of things but he is a not a cheat coz he doesn’t lie. Imbibe that in your thorax.

  19. Lou  •  Jul 19, 2009 @19:30

But surely it is the umpire’s fault, rather than Strauss, though I must admit he is showing a proper ‘win at all costs’ mentality that I never expected from him, but don’t blame him for. He isn’t a orphan.

How can Doctrove who is so very keen on not-outing people decide emphatically that this one was out after the Hauritz episode? It is so easy for the umpires to be consistent in these particular cases and they have not been at all. The Hussey one was a completely honest mistake if completely wrong and when things aren’t going right….

It makes me laugh to see Swann getting more dodgy decisions in his favour, after the Windies tour, I thought he had used up his quota for the year.

  20. Chris Weston  •  Jul 19, 2009 @20:03

I don’t think it’s possible to discern whether it was grassed or not from the video. I think the third ump would not have given it, though. The ball didn’t appear to rise into the hands as it did with Hauritz yesterday, but it’s possible that it rested on a few blades of grass as Strauss grabbed it…

  21. The Village Cricketer  •  Jul 19, 2009 @22:11

Whinging Aussies! Strauss isn’t a cheat, he claimed what he thought was a fair catch, and the umpire gave the guy out. If Doctrove had any doubt he’d have consulted the video umpire. Any of you remember the Waugh ‘catch’ to remove Lara,? Yes the one that bounced three times and Waugh picked it up off the turf… obviously not.

  22. Steve  •  Jul 19, 2009 @23:36

    Village idiot.

Can’t spell, either, can you? It’s “whingeing”.

    Typical illiterate pom.

  23. Apples  •  Jul 20, 2009 @00:30

Steve, I don’t think spelling has ever been an issue for this site. And I reckon they would ‘ave been picking grass outa the seem after the Strauss “catch”. It was great listening to the Teev commentators trying to convince themselves it was up.

  24. Alan  •  Jul 20, 2009 @03:54

I hope Strauss never comes to Australia. We don’t want his kind here. I compare him with Jardine

  25. Eddie  •  Jul 20, 2009 @05:26

I can’t believe no one has spotted the elaborate plan. Strauss (born in South Africa) has teamed up with Koertzen (another South African) to screw over Australia and Billy Doctrove went along with it as he is still pissed that Australia replaced the West Indies as the world’s leading cricketing power house. It’s quite simple if you think about it really.

  26. The Village Cricketer  •  Jul 20, 2009 @18:56

Sorry if my spelling upset you Steve, I’m happy to admit that a true whinger would know best how to spell ‘WHINGEING’. I can spell ‘WE WON’ though.

  27. Jonathan  •  Jul 21, 2009 @02:32

Homer, it’s fair enough to compare this umpiring with the KP incident (or Hauritz, or a million others…), but isn’t Moses’ point that you somehow left the KP incident out of the other half of your comment? What is the difference in the fielder’s actions?

  28. Sunny  •  Jul 21, 2009 @11:59

@robert – oh yeah…punter has never claimed a bumped catch?!
