It’s hard to say, but so was Kaluwitharana, and look how good he turned out.
Punditit is a social networking site for sports fans.
And i must say it’s damn good.
It is not cricket speciific, but the cricket content is not bad, even if it is a bit Englishcentric.
You may have noticed at the bottom of each of my posts that there is a submit to pundit button.
Press that button and be swept away to a world like you cannot believe.
If you want to choose a post that you like, that you think the world should know about, send it to punditit, and say “hey, i liked this on the balls, you small minded mouth breathers should be reading it too”.
You can also do it with other sites, although, I’d prefer you didn’t.
Punditit also has some sort of special connectivity to facebook, so you don’t need to join if you have a facebook profile, unless you want to join, and then i spose you could, but you do not have to. .
The button on my site is still in beta mode, so if you are having trouble using it, just go to the site direct and post up all my best nuggets by pressing submit news.
Use the balls to become more popular, pretty sweet.
So get pundititing.

Is there any real advantage to using this site compared to established news/headline aggregators like digg or reddit? I mean doesn’t reddit have the option (and I believe there is a cricket section that already exists) to setup specific subject lists like this.
So why would I go to Punditit when theroar, reddit and other sites have bigger communities (hence more discussion) and better features? Is their something special about their ranking algorithm that makes them unique? I’m sick of all these copy-cat sites that pop up promising the world and delivering absolutely nothing new.
Besides, cricket has finally started making the front page on digg and I’m a lot more comfortable “digging” something than “PUN-DIT-ITING” it.
Achettup, technically aren’t they all copycat sites, i mean only one or two invented them, and there are heaps of them.
I ain’t no expert on the technical stuff, but this site looks ok. It’s a sport site, not a everything site like Digg. Cricket is listed on it’s homepage as the second sport, it’s not hid in the other sports section like on some of the others. Cricket won’t have to struggle to get to the front page, like it would at other sites. If you have facebook you don’t have to even join it, and you can publish the links you have punditited on your facebook profile all in one click.
And unlike theroar, who have generally ignored this site even though I am Australian, the guy from punditit contacted me, and went out of his way to help in technical problems and seemed like a good bloke.
So the message here is, don’t try and bully me or suck up to me when sending an email, just be honest and personal and if i like your site, you’ll get a post.
Jrod, I don’t mean to diss your sponsor/technical-helper/friend. The truth is that ever since reddit went open source, anyone (and several people have already) can set up a site like Punditit. For reasons that I’m not going to go into, most of these sites fail and I will admit that I take delight in that when all they have done is borrowed the code and try tried implementing a business idea they don’t understand, in other words a bad attempt at profiting off someone else’s knowledge.
The fact that their second most important section is a cricket section is hardly a good enough reason for me to spend time on another headline aggregator. And anyway if there are enough people promoting cricket on reddit and digg then I’m quite certain they’d create the categories there as well, in which case overnight this site would be dead, right?
Whats important to me is how they build on the previous site… are they innovative, have they built new ways of dealing with the common problems user generated content sites have, are their built in mechanisms to deal with “bury” (btw your guy needs to check if he’s infringing on digg’s trademark by using that) brigades etc etc… because in the end thats whats going to ensure that a site like this survives and thrives.
I haven’t seen that on Punditit, I’ve seen a pretty sloppy mechanism for getting articles to the front page and there is no blog that would explain to someone like me why they are different. There’s lots to say about the site that I will not, because I understand that the guy has helped you out and so you’re trying to return the favor (or something).
But I just think in the long term, the companies that have employed people specifically to deal with the plethora of issues that arise with these kinds of websites, are the better bets when it comes to getting the sports/cricket community involved in submissions and discussions, than start-ups struggling to create their own community. Merely cutting down the categories and using an existing framework (or worse on one that is less sophisticated) doesn’t really seem to have any benefit in my opinion.
So all I’m trying to do is bring up a general point here, nothing personal against anyone, which is why I asked in my first comment if there was a specific reason you’d recommended this site. If I don’t like I won’t use it, and if it grows, good for them.
He’s not a sponsor, technical helper, a friend or someone who has helped me. Just a guy with a website who asked me to promote it. I used it, it seemed to work, I promoted it. Have done the same with countless other cricket/sport websites. If I think it’s something someone would be interested in, and I am approached nicely, i put it up. I have no interest or knowledge in the technical side. I suppose the key difference is the Facebook side of it, I don’t know if other sites do that, but it seems like something people could use, and a great deal of the readers of this site are on facebook and like the idea of cricket social networking, this does seem to bring those two things together. The specific reason is: he asked, it worked and facebook connectivity.
Fair enough. You’ve promoted my blog in the past and I’m grateful for that. Like I said the only reason I was bringing it up was because I wondered if it had something that I hadn’t seen yet, from my own visits to the site, that had prompted you to write on it.
No probs mate.
I agree Jrod, this punditit seems like a good page and with a focus on sport which makes it different and personally better for me than the Diggs and Reddits of this world. They are great sites but why not take a focus on sport which lets all of us sport lovers concentrate on purely sports banter and whats most controverisal / interesting in cricket, rugby or whatever at the time. I like it. I dont think copy-cat, its just a more niche . . pligg technology is available for anything, like anything in the world people like what they like . . so why not have a sports dedicated site, a shopping one or politics . . and if the best stories in each realm make the front page then so much the better for all of us. Easy.
Achettup, is it not innovative through the sports market which they concentrate on? As you say say Run, pligg is for anyone and I dont see any of the issues or sloppiness that you talk of – seems to function pretty well and I like the sports only message. Chance to push cricket stories – lets do it Jrod. With the current tour with everything to do to redeem why the hell not! I hope Freddie is well!
The key differences of Punditit to Digg are the sports focus and the Facebook Connect option. Punditit is not trying to rip Digg off. It is taking a good idea and modifying its focus so that it is better for a different group of people, in this case sports fans. This sort of evolution happens in all industries. If it werent the case there would only be one type of car or one fizzy drink brand. Using Facebook Connect to allow the debate to reach a wider group of people is a technical innovation from all the other social news sites.
